I can't really picture it myself, since the only 2D realtime fighting I know is really clumsy, but it sounds cool so I'll have faith in your battle system

It's great to see that this has indeed progressed beyond a mere daydream and that so many have taken an interest! I wish I could help you with programming but I have no experience with that. I think that graphics won't be so important for this game since the story is so awesomely complicated!
    Keep it up!

Also if you need any help other than programming (i.e. music, Photoshop) ask away!

I am rather tired, friends. I just spent the whole day working on Fourth Age, but it is always nice to see progress. I hit a snag and was pretty upset when I learned how difficult certain things with this engine would be. For example, character creation. You cannot create your own character in that engine. What would happen is, I make the main character and you begin playing them at the start of the game. There is nothing prior to that, besides the main menu. No character creation at all. So what I had to do is make it myself, and it all worked out. A few bugs here and there, but I am working them out. It is just time consuming.

In character creation you can now 1) Choose your race, 2) select your class (from Warrior, Barbarian, Minstrel, Lore-master, Burglar, Craftsman and Noble), 3) choose the skills you are trained in, 4) select your in-game avatar and character portrait (courtesy of the Lord of the Rings trading card game and film clips), and 5) select your origin. There are plenty of origins to choose from, too. I'm starting out small; I don't want to do too much and make it too difficult to handle, but thus far I have added two origins that I originally wanted to include: Man Corsair and Easterling. Some day I intend to also add Wildman of Dunland and Haradrim origins, but for now the Traveler origin will have to do. Surprisingly, I am having a lot of fun writing the Hobbit origin.

Thanks everybody for the support! As soon as I get enough done so that I am comfortable I will make a thread on the RPG Maker VX forums so that everybody can contribute! The game will be pretty great once it is finished - already I am enjoying the small bits that I get to play of it. That being said, I really cannot say enough how bad the graphics are. They remind me of those old Legend of Zelda graphics, to be honest. However, after you are playing for a few hours somehow they grow on you.

@ Aron the Dwarf: For RPG Maker VX you don't actually need any scripting experience. I mean, it helps, but you don't need it to make a full game. That is why it is so interesting! You can spend more time actually developing the game. That being said, it has to be that good to make up for the terrible graphics.

I think that the character creation will be fine. It will sort of be like the pr-setup characters from Skyrim, correct?
I'll check out RPG maker VX, any idea on where to acquire the software?

Well I just checked out images of maps created using RPG Maker VX and I think I can handle it! It reminds me of the campaign editor versions of the Age of Empires Series (those of you into Real Time Strategy will know what I;m talking about). For those of you not clear on how it will look, it looks quite a lot like those Pokemon games little kids play on Nintndo DS and Gameboy, so yeah...not to good but I think the storyline will make up for it.
That being said Passive, I have an idea, would it not be possible to make the terrain on the Age of Mythology or Age of Empires III campaign editor feature? It is already fused into the game, looks good and a child of 8 could handle it. All we would need to do is create the maps there and somehow import them into our game. The characters could be created using a mod, with their stats beefed up, and therefore they would be 3-D. The only problem is I do not see with this is how the skills and experience system would work.
