It seems I'll have to rename this thread as today it was officially announced that the next step in LOTR gaming will be called "Guardians of Middle-earth" and will appear Fall 2012. Developer will be Monolith Productions, known for F.E.A.R. and several other games.
Guardians of Middle-earth will be a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) for both Playstation Network and Xbox Live and will contain content related to the upcoming The Hobbit film release.
Gamers will be able to choose out of over 20 different characters (Gandalf, Sauron, Gollum, Thráin and many others) to play with a maximum of 10 players (5v5) as some kind of PvP arena.
Players will also have access to an ingame communication system and leaderboards in which they can follow the victories and defeats of their friends.
New 'Guardians' will appear nearing and after the The Hobbit release. The game would cost €14,99 / £11.99 for Playstation Network or 1200 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live. More information as it comes up
PS. I only have a (very trustworthy) link to a Dutch site at the moment. I'll add one to an English source when I find one.
The Dutch site:
9lives.be
EDIT: Here's the first English source:
Eurogamer.net
EDIT2:
Theonering.net also covered the story.
EDIT3: People who are interested can also check out the
official site! The game will also be shown at E3.
