I play on Landroval (best server ever), and have a level 48 Hobbit burglar (and a bunch of other alts). I've been playing the game since its launch in April 2007, and I still haven't even reached 50.

Agreed. LOTRO is a great mmorpg. From a visual standpoint, two of its best areas are ones that we won't have access to in War in The North, which is The Shire and Lothlorien.

I am loving Moria. I've been spending about 8 hours a day for the last 4 days in there questing. It's fantastic. Gaining a level a day, enjoying it that much.

I tried this game out and was amazed by it for a while. I stopped playing though because of the awkward and resentful community. I would join group after group for instances, but there would be either no leadership at all or an elitist with terrible grammar skills to complain about how bad everybody is. I wound up getting some of the best gear in the game too after a while, but I still could not stand the community. Most of the best gear you can get just grinding easy instances over and over again. It seems as soon as you have to interact with people in this game, it crashes and burns which was sad for me because I really enjoyed the game. Moria is probably one of the most well made areas I've seen in a videogame, but MMORPGs really have pissed me off lately, especially WoW and its community as well.

I have yet to find a MMORPG that can let me enjoy it without having to deal with pretentious idiots. I've played WoW, DDO, LOTRO, and Runescape... I'll admit LOTRO was probably the best out of these four but still, I've had items scammed off me before in Runescape several times back before the trade system was fixed, and the graphics are still horrific, it was mildly entertaining like maybe 6 years ago. The reason I quit WoW is because no matter how good you are in that game, you are worse to somebody else and people make sure you know that quite often. The drama would coalesce into nightmarish forum wars and trade wars and blahblahblah... That guild is poaching this guild's players and blablah... It presents too many volatile situations to make the game fun. I played it since before the first expansion up until ICC and wasn't able to tank or dps anything PvE related until WotLK. I even ended up main tanking ICC and my guild did a great job, but the MOMENT we got to the dragon boss before the lich king, we wiped at 2% a few times and then the guild fell apart almost instantaneously. It's like real life values just don't apply in WoW. You mess up, then you're a failure, etc. DDO was tolerable, but way too chaotic. I found myself messing up a quest by accident during a run and everybody would send me paragraphs of swears saying how much of an idiot I am for accidentally finishing the quest before they got the last optional part. People in that game expect you to know what to do at all times or you are nothing. In that respect, LOTRO is probably one of the best MMORPGs out there because even though the community can be kind of awkward and strange, it has the most respectable and mature player base. I guess the problem is that I don't want to live a game, I want to play it and have fun. MMORPGs definitely aren't for me though, sticking to console games from now on.

@jmak it will take a while, leave it running overnight or something

@Kindredbay What happened to you is called being on a PUG (pick up group) this usually means there is no leadership and nobody knows what they are getting so it is often seen as a bad experience for everyone. Instances and raids need no only leadership but they require each participant to contribute and fill a specific role, and if the player has not done group content this can be rather difficult to coordinate. For example a guardian will normally run on overpower during solo content, but in group content they are expecting to just hold aggro and shield wall the healer: two things they do not need to care about when running around solo. If you want to experience the mmo multiplayer side, you should join a guild/kinship and have some of the officers tutor you on the role of your class and get to know their raid leader. It can be very fun once everyone knows each other and fits into the class purpose.

@Kindredbay I'm sorry you had to experience that. I've found that on general, the community is pretty good, and something like that has never happened to me. Unfortunately, I don't think you'll ever find a MMO that doesn't have those kind of people.

LOTRO is agreat game , I just appeciate wandering around and watch the landscapes ! The scenery is one of the most faithfull to Tolkien's lore , as with War in the North and the Third Age on ps2 . I'm a dwarf in Ered Luin , frankly that region is very well depicted , and makes you want just have a walk and defeating mobs ; it's merely addictive !
The thing I dont' like too much is as my comp is not very powerful I'm still under Dx9 , so no better water , no astonishing shadows and more detailed textures .

I would love to play this game properly, but so far I'm not really feeling it.. I'm using the unofficial mac version, and I find that it takes up too much of my macbook's memory, and it's slightly sluggish, when you move around..
It isn't as smooth as say WoW, but then again, it could be because of the fact that wow has been built for mac, and LotRO hasn't
